RBC Folate
Understanding RBC Folate
What is RBC Folate?
RBC Folate tests evaluate folate (vitamin B9) levels from the liquid part of the blood (serum/plasma) to assess any deficiencies. The body needs folate for normal growth and to make red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets. The test is administered by taking a small sample of blood from a vein in your arm.
Symptoms of low folate include fatigue, low energy and shortness of breath, headaches, reduced sense of taste, and diarrhea. Treatment includes eating green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, dry beans, peas, and liver or folic acid supplements.
RBC Folate tests are used to detect folate deficiencies and the causes of anemia.
What is RBC Folate used for?
This test helps to detect the causes of conditions such as anaemia and neuropathy, to survey the nutrition levels in people and also to observe the outcomes of the treatment for the vitamin deficiency. You should also get tested if you experience deficiency symptoms such as loss of memory, anaemia or itchiness.
Interpreting RBC Folate results
Interpretations
Normal test results determine that there is no vitamin deficiency. Also normal levels can indicate that the stored vitamin level has not yet been exhausted.
